For the members of South Africa’s Special Task Force, the trip to Dubai has become something of an annual ritual, one that now extends beyond the competition floor and onto the screen. The unit’s participation in the UAE SWAT Challenge is featured in the event’s 2026 Wrap Up Documentary, which includes an appearance by the South African team’s commander, speaking in his own words about what the international competition meant for him and his team.
The film offers a behind-the-scenes look at the Challenge. It captures the experiences of the participating teams, the intensity of the contest and, crucially, the people behind the tactical performances. Viewers get a glimpse of what takes place away from the competition floor, as teams work through a series of demanding tactical challenges.
That human dimension sits at the heart of what the Challenge has come to represent. Since the competition launched in 2019, South Africa’s Special Task Force has returned year after year, building a reputation for performances that showcase tactical skill, operational expertise, physical endurance and teamwork, tested alongside specialist police units from around the world.
The event itself is designed to push those qualities to their limits. The UAE SWAT Challenge brings together elite police tactical teams and specialist units from across the globe for five days of competition aimed at testing operational readiness, precision, speed, physical endurance and teamwork. It is held at Al Ruwayyah Training City in Dubai, where five tactical events unfold over five consecutive days. Teams accumulate points and rankings across the events, and their combined performances determine the overall standings.
The 2026 edition underlined just how far the competition has grown, drawing 108 teams from 48 countries. That scale has made the Challenge not only a test of tactical ability but also a platform for excellence and knowledge exchange, where officers from very different policing traditions can learn from one another.
For the South African contingent, the documentary now forms part of that legacy. Beyond scores and standings, it records the effort, discipline and camaraderie that carry a team through five days of relentless competition, and gives audiences at home a rare view of the people behind the unit’s international reputation.
The story is set to continue. The Special Task Force will return to Dubai when the UAE SWAT Challenge runs again from January 23 to 27, 2027, extending a participation streak that stretches back to the competition’s founding in 2019.
Those interested in seeing the competition in person will have the chance to do so. The 2027 edition will be open to the public free of charge across the five-day event at Al Ruwayyah Training City in Dubai, offering spectators a firsthand look at the tactical performances that teams, including South Africa’s, have spent years refining.
